This month, Heidi Emoto, introduces Kotoba & Sign which focuses on various language related services including translation, editing and providing support for multilingual families.
We are currently focusing on Signing Time classes, sharing the benefits of using signs for early communication and as a bridge between spoken languages.
What have you found to be the biggest challenge being a small business owner? How did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I have so far has been figuring out how to get started. It is easy to have an idea and tell people about it but it can be challenging to put all the details together to make an idea into reality. In the past I’ve always worked for/with someone who is more experienced so this is the first time to do things like bookkeeping.
To overcome this challenge I had to just dive in and get started. I am learning about various aspects of having a business as I go along.
What do you enjoy the most about being a small business owner?
I love the flexability. I can take my kid’s school schedule and plan my work schedule around the big events and most of the small ones. I can also choose how I want to run my classes or which translation projects to take on. It is great to work mainly on things that I feel passionate about.
What advice do you have for fellow momtrepeneurs?
One thing which has been of great help is connecting with other people in similar businesses through Facebook to share ideas and lend support. Becoming a certified Signing Time Academy Instructor came with a huge support group of other instructors from around the world who challenge each other to keep improving.
Heidi Emoto is originally from the USA and has been in Tokyo for the last 12 years.
